11 June 1870 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 11th [June 1870]. I spent most of the morning chatting with Mrs Burr—so did nothing but write a note to the M & also to Mrs Hutchins. Directly after lunch the carriage came round & we went off to the Cortès. The Diplomatic tribune was very full as it was expected that Prim would make some declaration as to the choice of a King—besides diplomats some other ladies made their way in to our tribune & we were very glad when Del Cerro came & got them turned out. Prim made a very good clever speech running over the list of candidates. He said that to the Prince of Asturias as he had said “jamas jamas jamas” so now he repeated “Jamas Jamas Jamas”. He said the marriage of Don Ferninand of Portugal had rendered it impossible to have him & he had been unsuccessful in persuading the Duke of Genoa to accept it as his mother was so against it—that there was a fourth whose name he was bound in honour not to pronounce & that he had vainly tried to induce this 4th. Such being the case he had no candidate to offer & was at the orders of the Assembly– When he sat down Rio Rosas replied fiercely & lamely & the matter was left– One thing else Prim said “that it was very difficult to find a suitable King”—on wh the Republicans violently applauded but Prim resumed—“But there is no need of the Republicans to applaud as it would be far more difficult to form a republic”– It was very hot in the Cortès & at 5 we were glad to go home & have some Horchata de Chufas to cool & refresh ourselves during wh Mr & Mrs Bell called. At 6 we went out riding & met the Regent & Dss & suite. After dinner Cerruti came in to talk to Henry & I & Mrs Burr sat over the piano, I playing & singing. | |
