12 June 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 12th [June 1870]. We got up early & breakfasted at 7 & went off by an 8 o’cl: train, Henry Mrs Burr Mr Seymour & I, to spend the day at the Escurial. We arrived there in 3 hours—a distance of 24 miles! & went in an omnibus to the Fonda de Miranda where we left our cloaks &c & then went off to the Palace. We had a letter from the Regent to the “Administrador” so that we were shown everything & being Sunday it is not all open to the public– We were taken to see the hole where died Philip II– The Pantheon—all the private apartments & also to see an immense marble crucifix behind the Corso by Benvenuto Cellini—but Henry did not immensely admire it. At ½ past 1 we had seen it all & were tired & went off to the Fonda to get our luncheon a good deal of which we had brought with us. After lunch Mrs Burr rushed off to get a little sketch & Henry & I & Mr Sey: went into the Gardens & worked our way to the Casita de los Infantes where the Administrador was to meet us at 4.30. It is quite a nutshell of a house too small for anything only having some pretty rooms of marquetine & some Buen Retiro china plaques à la Wedgwood. After seeing the house we walked in the private gardens & had roses & lilies given us & then went to the station. There we waited an immense time as there were so many excursionists they had some difficulty in making up the train. However we got back to Madrid abt 8 but by this time I had a very bad headache & as soon as I got home rushed to bed.
