16 June 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 16th [June 1870]. Today being the Corpus Domini we went to the “Covea” to see the procession; by a stupid mistake of Espinosa’s we went there at ½ past 10 instead of ½ past 12 & had to wait all that time as the procession did not come till one. It was very tiresome being very hot but we had a room to ourselves & the people were very civil. The troups lined the streets on each side & on the approach of the Custodia they knelt down & bared their heads. There was very little magnificence or show the day of such things being past & besides the priests very poor since the Revolution & they say it is 8 months since they have had any pay. Some handsome crosses were carried & the priests bearing the canopy wore handsome brocade robes. At 2 it was over & we were invited by Mme Moreno Benites to go & take some refreshments wh being sweets & ices I did not care for as I was tired & faint—through a back entrance we made our escape got to the carriage & went home & for a couple of hours I rested till at 5 Inzenga came to give me my 1st lesson in singing Spanish. At 6 we took a ride in the Casa round by the race course & home to dinner & I spent the evening in practising the Spanish songs.
