28 June 1870 — La Granja
Tuesday. 28th [June 1870]. I sat working & writing in the morning when a gentleman came from the Regent saying he had sent him to show Henry a telegram he had just received & to our horror it contained news of the death of Lord Clarendon wh occurred yesterday morning. It was a matter of great sorrow to both of us. Henry lost a good chief & a kind friend & I was also very sorry as he had always been so kind to me & I remember the fun we had when last at the Grove when he laughed at the note book I had & in wh I pretended to put down any & every hint on what we ought to bring out with us—& how with a barley sugar crown there was in a dish they pretended to crown me Queen of Spain– I am sure his sons & daughters will miss him sadly. At 12.30 I went to sew with the Dss & came back to lunch at 2. Palmaroli came to call. His wife & child are here & he has come to see them. Some one had given Conchita a miserable little sparrow with its wing clipped & they sent it to me so I tried to feed it & keep it alive. After tea I dressed & the Dss called for us & I went with her in her little basket carriage & the Regent & Hy & Miss Paz followed in the Landeau. They took us to see a garden called Robledo wh formerly belonged to the Crown & had just been sold.
