3 July 1870 — La Granja
Sunday. 3rd [July 1870]. Not very well this morng. We intended to have ridden at 8 but found it was a cloudy drizzly morning & as I was not well I stayed in bed till luncheon time– After that I read & wrote till 5 o’cl: & we then went to the Regents to go with them to the gardens. We had to wait for the Dss who was not quite ready but Mlle Paz was there & when Henry asked her whether there was any news, she surprised us by answering, “The Dss has just told me we are to have a king”– We all went to see the fountains play having seen ½ last Sunday; we to day saw the remaining ½ & especially one called “Le bain de Diane” wh they told me had cost 13 millions of reals. After the fountains the Dss & Rt went driving with Miss Paz & offered to take us but I thought it better not to be out so late in consideration of this morning’s attack & came home.
