17 July 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 17th [July 1870]. I did not get up till after breakfast & did not feel over well & lay on the sofa reading over again “Great Expectations” & after lunch I copied a letter to Ld Granville for Henry & wrote to the Dss. After tea I sat at the window looking out into the courtyard and directed Henry who was gardening—& lying up the creepers in the patio. At 7 Mercier came in & said he had just returned from seeing his wife & children off to the station. He seemed very sad at Brosé’s departure as he said the boy was his constant companion & even slept in his room. He said there was no further news from Paris & he had not heard for 3 days—but he seemed to consider war inevitable. As soon as he was gone I dressed for dinner & the Riaños & Hunts dined. We had a little music after dinner. | |
