19 July 1870 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 19th [July 1870]. I wrote read & worked all day and at 5 Mrs Hunt brought her little child to see us. Henry had telegram to say war could not be prevented between France & Prussia. Before dinner I had a long practise at the piano & after dinner Clarita Hunt came & we drove her to Mme Montijo. Found her very much shaken by the shock of the news from France but still better than she had been. She had received a telegram from the Empress to say the Emp. & the Prince Imperial had gone to the seat of war. The old lady was very chatty & gave me one of her big fans a “pericon.” We did not stay late. It was cool & windy coming home. | |
