22 July 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 22nd [July 1870]. I worked & read but it was too hot to stir. At 6 I went & dressed for driving & when I was ready found Weisweiller calling. At abt ¼ to 7 we went out driving in the Fuente returning to dinner at 8. After dinner we went to Prims & found them sitting on their balcony & joined them. She was full of the horrors of the approaching war & said the French could not surely win—their cause was such a bad one & I quite agreed with her. A few people came in but nobody I knew & we did not stay late. Cerruti had joined us after dinner & we took him there also.
