23 July 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 23rd [July 1870]. I wrote several letters & did not work very much. Mercier came to see us in the afternoon & tho’ he had no news seems very confident of the success of the French. Cerruti also came for an instant & also Mr Hamilton who stayed some time. At ½ past 6 we took a drive but my head ached a good deal & I did not enjoy it much the heat being very great & seems to increase daily. We had a small dinner Messrs Silvela, Martos, Canitz & Moret y Prendergast (who is Minister of the Colonies)– Of course they talked a great deal about the war & sat smoking late. When they came to the drawing room we proposed going to the Buen Retiro & we took Martos & Baron Canitz took M. Silvela. We found the Prims at the concert & sat with them & saw a good many people– Mme Silvela was there & they start tomorrow for Paris en route for Vichy. Also saw Mr Sagasta & de Blas &c &c. Came home abt 11.30.
