31 July 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 31st [July 1870]. Read all day & helped to attend to Hill. At 6 we went out driving to leave some cards on the Regent who is back from La Granja & to take a drive in the Fuente– Mercier, Blondeel, Topete, De Blas Mr Montesino (nephew of Duke of Vitoria) & Moreno Benites (now no longer Govr of Madrid having lately resigned on account of that murder (by mistake), of the gentleman by the Carlists) dined with us. We had a very amusing dinner as they all took pleasure in getting a nice acct of Topete & chaffing him, however he really took it au grand serieux & got excited & angry & said he would show them all before long that he would propose the Duke of Montpensier in the Cortès & that he would be made King & that he knew that it was his (Topete’s) own fault that he was not now on the throne. After I went away while they were smoking I am told that the joke turned upon Montesino whom they said would have been Prince of the Asturias if his uncle had been made King. In the evening Weisweiller came in & sat talking some little time. | |
