1 August 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 1st August [1870]. Having had a toothache in the night I did not get up till after breakfast & as soon as I was dressed I went to help the Dr to dress Hill’s arm wh took till lunch time & after that I wrote letters to Mme Riaño &c—& at 4 I went to dress Hill’s arm as now she is better & the Dr only comes once a day & I dress it the 2 other times. At 5 we had a visit from the new Portuguese Minister Mr D’acosta– He seems a nice agreeable little man & says he has just been moved here from St Petersbourg. This is the 3rd Portuguese Minister since we came here. After he left the Prussian Canitz came in but did not stay very long. He said he had had no news from home– He had had a telegram this morning from his Govt but there was no mention of any battle. We went out for a short ride & came home to dine at 7½ & Cerruti dined with us & we afterwards drove to Caravanchel to see Mme Montijo, and found there amongst others, Blondeel, Mercier Le Marquis Acapulco. Mme Montijo was in pretty good spirits & had great hopes of the result of the war tho’ she is evidently very nervous & shaken by the whole affair. We left Cerruti to go home with Mercier & drove home alone. There was news of a great battle & the French beaten.
