2 August 1870 — Madrid
Tuesday. 2nd [August 1870]. I spent the morning between working the sewing machine & helping to attend to Hill who is going on very well. In the evening we took a ride along the upper Mon Cloa road & explored thereabouts. It appears that the news published yesterday in the “Volante de la Compaña” were as Henry anticipated false—but evidently there had been a slight skirmish at Saarbruck from wh the Prussians had retreated. We had Mme Karnicky, Mr Esperanza, Mr Scipion Morillo & Baron Benifayo to dine with us—a very nice little dinner. Afterwards Mr Esperanza played & I sang & Cerruti came in to spend the evening.
