22 August 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 22nd [August 1870]. I worked the machine all day long till we went out & took a walk in the Retiro. While sitting there Mercier came up on us & walked a little with us & having sent the carriage round to the Puerta d’Alcala we walked there with him & came home– We dined at 7.30 & then drove to Caravanchel to see poor old Mme Montijo, we found her very much depressed & shaken but after a while she seemed to get better. Mme Nava de Tajo was home from Eaux Bonnes. She told Henry that they had heard that the Emp. & P. Imp. just missed being caught by the Prussians—that not ½ hour after they had gone thro’ some village the Prussians arrived there. Rather cold driving home.
