23 August 1870 — Madrid
Tuesday. 23rd [August 1870]. I worked in morng. Henry went out walking today & yesterday before breakfast. After luncheon Lindstrand (Swedish M) called—then Ittersum then Blondeel—by the time they were gone it was time to go out so we took our walk in the Retiro. Dr Jilly goes back to Eng. tomorrow to fetch his family & so he sent in his bill—to our horror £83! We were indignant. We went to call on the Hamiltons & to warn them. Found them in & that their baby was ill & they had had Dr Jilly, but of course did not intend to see him again. At the end of dinner Cerruti appeared—& we went together to Mr Weisweiller’s box at the Opera; it was a benefit night & Tamberlick sang. The trio in Guillaume Tell—& a scene in Poliuto. There was also a Spanish Comedy & a Zarzuela– The Prims were there & the house pretty full– No news tonight—nearly 4 days since we had any from the war.
