24 August 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 24th [August 1870]. No news today again. Mr Rutledge called here having today come from Cordova. He brought us 70 plates (Moorish & old) which he had invested in for us—also a curious old iron spur of Cinque cento work. He goes to London on a holiday tomorrow. Mercier sent to say he would come & dine with us & Cerruti also came. Mercier talked of nothing but the war & was very low & depressed. We went after dinner rather late to the Retiro gardens but saw very few people that we knew.
