10 September 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 10th [September 1870]. Got up late but much better this morning; got several letters & wrote some. Heard fm At Mary saying Lewis was at sea in the “Captain” & yesterday Henry had a telegram to say the “Captain” had foundered & all the crew lost so poor Lewis must have been among the number. Only on the 10th of last October we heard of Bertrand’s death! Poor Aunt Mary has a deal of sorrow. Mme Ochoa & her daughter to call, also the Govr of Madrid, an agreeable man, who speaks French well. It was a sultry day so we put off riding till ½ past 5. Cerruti dined with us & afterwards we went to join the Regent & Dss at the Circo de Madrid. They gave the “Figlia del Reggimento” & then the ballet “Espiritu del Mar”– On our return Hy had a telegram from Ld Granville saying the present French Govt are disposed to ask for peace.
