21 October 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 21st [October 1870]. I went to sit to Pal. & just as I was leaving this house Mr Weisweiller drove up & said he had brought a telegram to show Henry. I told him that Henry & the 3 attachés had gone off to the Grand Function at the church of S. Francisco which was held in honour of Adl Gravina at the battle of Trafalgar. Weisweiller told me that he had a telegram also speaking of an armistice but it had taken 2 days coming. After my sitting Palmaroli brought me home & Henry returned to luncheon. I went for a drive & wanted to take out Emilia but she was out so I went to the Fuente & there I saw the Regent’s children walking so I took Venturita & Pepita for a turn & then dropped them with their nurse & came home. The Hunts, Inzenga & Monasterio (the violinist) dined with us. We found Monasterio very pleasant & he speaks very good French. He is very peculiar looking—middle height, thin dark with longish crêpé hair with sallow complexion & says he is very delicate. After dinner Messrs Lushington, Underdown, Alleyne & Go: & Ash: came in, Riaños Cerruti & Caleriani also. We sang glees & had a deal of music. Monasterio was delighted with the glees which is quite a new sort of music to him.
