27 October 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 27th [October 1870]. Not having to go to Palmaroli I took to my old work of mending tapestry & worked nearly all the morning at it. After lunch Mr Alleyne called he leaves for Eng: today. At 3½ we went out for a ride to Casa de Campo & when we came back my feet were so cold & numbed that I nearly fell when I jumped off my horse. Had some tea & warmed myself. After dinner we went to the Regency—not many people there. There was to have been an Opera tonight but one of the singers (Ranconi) is ill so it is postponed till Saturday. The Sivela’s were at the Regency & I had a long talk with him. He seemed pleased at the prospect of a King & said they all said it was thanks to Henry’s efforts that they had got one. He also said that when Hy was appointed here the accts of Hy from England quite frightened them. He was represented as an “homme feroce”—violent & who would try to be the master with them & that everyone was so agreeably disappointed when they found him so agreeable, easy to get on with, artistic &c. & that they like him exceedingly here in Spain.
