3 November 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 3rd [November 1870]. I worked hard & got the frock finished & sent it to Mr Underdown to take to Eng:—directly after lunch I walked with Henry to the Cortès & we heard his Prim’s speech proposing the Duke of Aosta for the throne as the Govt Candidate. The Republicans under Castelar made a long speech of abt 3 hours—a violent attack upon the Govt, abuse of Aosta & altogether was violent & insolent. We stayed there till 6 & then Mme de Martino brought me home & I dressed & we went to dine at the Regency. We waited a long time for dinner as a great many of the men dining were deputies & had been kept at the Cortès. A poor madman dined at the Regency who made verses & sang & went in a most painful manner. He had been very clever & literary but had 3 times been shut up & is now supposed to be harmless. His name is . I had a headache so we came home early.
