8 November 1870 — Madrid
Tuesday. 8th [November 1870]. This morng the bird was dead despite all our care– We went at 12 to the Gallery to show it to Car. Palmaroli met us there & we looked at the Van dyk & Tintoretto portraits of men in fur to get an idea for Henry’s portrait. We came home to lunch & did not go out again but wrote letters & I wrote a long one to Lady Ely to go by the messenger. The Duchess de la Torre gave us the box so we went to the Opera “Nabuco” wh I like more & more. Did not see many people except Silvela, Valera, Gomez & Adee.
