13 November 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 13th [November 1870]. At breakfast I got a note from Miss Whyte saying her pa was not well eno’ to do the service. Car & I talked all the morng. I wrote &c till lunch. Cerruti came in & Palmaroli at lunch time. P. said he would begin Car’s portrait tomorrow. Directly after lunch we went out driving & went to the Convent of the Salesas which has just been turned into Law Courts. It is an enormous building with 2 court yards & a large garden—but it is perfectly unornamented & not very interesting– He went to 4 Barquillo & showed Car Mme Riaños pretty drawing room & then came home. Messrs Ash. Go. & Sey & Admiral Wiseman dined with us. The Adl is a tall strong built man—rather serious & heavy but good natured. They all left early.
