14 November 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 14th [November 1870]. At ½ past ten I went with Car to Pals for her to sit for her picture. He is doing her head & shoulders in brown sealskin with beaver trimming some old lace round her neck & red bows. At ¼ past 1 I had a singing lesson of Inzenga. Henry & Car took a walk & I went to leave cards & call on the Dss de la Torre. I then went to the Fuente & picked up Henry & Car & brought them home. We had our first dinner party & reception of this season. While I was dressing for dinner Henry rushed in to say M & Mme Moret (he is minister for the Colonies) had come to dinner uninvited—they had evidently misunderstood our invitation to come in the eveng. We however managed to put 2 more places at table & they did not find out their mistake: we were 14 to dinner the Riaños the Marquis de Molino, Señors Benavides, de la Serna, Cuadrado &c. In the eveng the Dss of Tetuan & a good many people came but not so many as I expected on account of a meeting of members of the Cortès at the Senate to talk over the Aosta candidature.
