17 November 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 17th [November 1870]. Went with Car whilst she sat to Palmaroli. A dull afternoon & we proposed to take a walk– We went to the Plaza Mayor & when there I suggested we shd go on to Calle de los Estudios to see whether in the Pranderias there they had anything new. We went into Vincente’s & there Car picked out an old fashioned gold & brilliant ring & asked my opinion as to whether she should buy it. I dissuaded her saying I was not sure it was really old & she left it. We walked home & after tea I practised a little when all of a sudden in rushed Hill & Giovanni to show me that one of the stolen goods a ring of Hill’s had been found at Vincente’s & on seeing I recognized the ring Car had wished to buy. V. said an old woman had sold it to him at 2 today. Cyrila did not come today so of course the suspicion fell on her. Cerruti dined with us & afterwards took us to the Regency, It was raining hard & the Regent was not visible being in bed with a cold.
