| 13 December 1870 — Madrid | |
| Tuesday. 13th [December 1870]. I wrote letters & read Don Carlos with Adeline. In afternoon Emilia came here & we went together to see over the Palace & they said it had lately been done up for the new King– The only difference that I perceived was that the carpets had been put down & some of them were very fine of the Royal carpet manufactory. We also went to the Library & were shown a wonderfully bound book with enamel & jewelled snaps & corner bits– When we got home A. & I read Don Carlos & Mr Blanc & tea interrupted us. We dined alone & then went to see Mme Montijo & there was there the Dss of Malakoff but she persistently played cards & never lifted her eyes– She appears abt 40 stout & tall– | |
