22 December 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 22nd [December 1870]. An unfortunate morng for the eclipse as it was overcast & rainy so that we did not go to the Observatory as we had arranged. I had a lesson from Grau but at no time was it dark eno’ to need candles. Mr Doria came to luncheon & we had a busy time getting the bags ready to send by him. I did not go out but Henry & A. went to the Cortès but soon returned finding nothing amusing going on. Mme Bauer & Mr Blanc also Mr Ash came to tea. We dined alone & then went to the Regency where there were a good many people & a rather more cheerful party than usual.
