7 January 1871 — Madrid
Saturday. 7th [January 1871]. Directly after breakfast Adeline went out to Mme de Martinos & I had a lesson of Grau wh lasted till ¼ past 1. At 12 Henry went out to Atocha to attend the ceremony of Prim’s burying. Arthur went at 11 to sit to Pal: for his picture. Ade & Arthur came home latish & we lunched late. Henry came abt 3 having been 3 hours at the church. He said the King was there but no Diplomats except himself & de la Rochefoucauld. It was very cold but we went out as far as Palmarolis, Arthur, Adeline, Henry & I to see how he had got on. We found that Pal. had got on astonishingly & in 2 sittings & had nearly done it & the likeness was quite wonderful. We came home straight from Pals & he came to tea with us. The Riaños came to tea & Del Cerro to see Henry. After dinner Ad. & Arthur went to Mme de la Rochefoucauld but Henry had still a bad cold & could not go out, so I stayed at home with him & we played a game of mandola together & went early to bed.
