17 January 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 17th [January 1871]. Got up with a headache & Henry was not well either & took his breakfast in bed– I could not touch my breakfast & laid down on the sofa of my boudoir & later on was very sick & had to go to bed & was sick all the afternoon. At 5 Brehm came & said it was a neuralgia of head & stomach & ordered me some seltzer powder. Henry went out to dine with the Pruss: Min: (Canitz) a Dipc: dinner given to Martos. At 7 my powder came & with it a small bottle of liquid medicine. Hill gave this to me mixed with the powder—to our horror when Henry came home I found the liquid was medicine Brehm had ordered Henry & contained morphine for his cough– Luckily it did me no harm. I dozed off abt 8 & did not see Arthur & Adeline again who left us by the eveng train for Cordova on their way to Gibraltar. I slept pretty well on the whole.
