22 January 1871 — Madrid
Sunday. 22nd [January 1871]. I went down to church. At luncheon Brehm came & directly after we rushed off to the concert but only to find there was none till next Sunday so we took a walk. It was a lovely, “spring-like” day. We called at the Riaños & found them in. Emilia showed me the Retiro vases her father had bought at Santander where he had been detained 9 days. He had spent the time in writing the preface to a Book & in ferretting out this china for her. We then walked home– Mr Weisweiller came in abt 6 & gave us the melancholy news of the death this morng at 11 of the Dss de Frias. Messrs Ash, Spen: & Sey & Ff: dined with us. I & Mr Ff had an examination of my old lace.
