23 January 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 23rd [January 1871]. We lunched early & directly afterwards went off to see Dr Brehm. He showed us his birds & we saw his 2 children & his wife who had been very handsome– We carried Brehm off with us to the Plaza Topete to the bird shop kept by the Italian & there he helped us to choose a lot of birds. Palmaroli & Mme de Martino came to tea & we made cotillion bows & had rather an interesting talk. Palmaroli said that I should go to heaven with the little children who play the [illegible words] & he & Mme de Martino with the clever but naughty people. Mr Ff: came also. We had rather a small party as there was another party going on given by Mme Superunda. Today being the feast of St Alfonso her ball was a kind of Alfonsest demonstration & every one went to hers. Mmes Martorelli & Bedmar & one or 2 others came on from there late in time for the cotillion wh was short—& it was past 2 when we got to bed. The Dss de la Torre & Serrano came– She looked lovely in a maize gown trimmed with violets. I told Serrano that I had heard that the King had fallen into disfavor amongst the ladies because he had taken to brush & curl & part his hair straight down the middle instead of brushing it straight on end in the picturesque way he did when he arrived. Serrano said “I must speak to H.M. Nous changerons cela!” & was much amused. I confessed I had not seen the King lately & spoke also from hearsay.
