25 January 1871 — Madrid
Wednesday. 25th [January 1871]. At 11 I went with Henry while he sat for the first time to Palmaroli for his picture. He just sketched him in sitting in a chair with a cappa on. At 3 Henry & I went to fetch Emilia in the carriage & we went to a restorer by name Braccio where we saw a lovely piece of tapestry wh Henry paid 300rs for & thought it would do for Ivor. We then went in search of an old lady living in the Carrera de Valencia who had some biscuit Retiro groups to sell—but she had an extravagant notion of their value & asked £50 for the 7. Out of charity I bought a Battersea enamel snuff box (double) for wh I gave her 8 douros. We went to dine at Genl Sickles—found all the Corps Dip: there & some of the ministers the Dss & Serrano– It was a long wearisome affair. Del Cerro took me in to dinner & I sat between him & Karnicky. I amused myself talking across Del Cerro to the Dss. We were over 24 at table & we stayed at table more than 2 hours. We did not remain long after– There was some dancing but we disappeared when it began–
