28 January 1871 — Madrid
Saturday. 28th [January 1871]. Henry went off to Pals to sit for his picture. At 11 I went to the Dss de la Torre where I breakfasted– The Dss had a drawing lesson & I helped her over some illumination. At 2 I came home & found Mr Ff: here & talked over cards with him. I copied a letter to Ld G. for Henry. Ct Karnicky came to tea also Mr Spen. & Mr Kay besides Pal who brought the sketch of Hy he had done– He did not care for the position of his 1st sketch & has made another standing wh I like better. We went to dine with the Weisweillers, met the Ettlings, Bauers, Llorente, Sr Ruiz Gomez (Late Govr of Madrid) & Mr Mury (Spanish Minister in Morocco). One or 2 more people came in eveng. There is news to night that the capitulation of Paris is in treaty– At 10½ we went to Mme de la Rochefoucauld where we found ½ doz. men & Henry played a little whist. We only stayed abt ½ hour. Telegraph from Gib to say Adeline had gone home on acct of the baby.
