30 January 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 30th [January 1871]. I got up rather late with a headache. Had my drawing lesson & laid on the sofa all day. After lunch Mr Goschen came being better of his sore throat– Mme de Martino called also & sat a little while. At 4 Mme Bauer came & at the same moment Mr Ashburnham. I had quite forgotten that on Saty eveng I had arranged with Mme B. that we should go together to pay a visit to Mme Prim together at 4. She said it did not matter she would leave my cards instead. Mr Ff: came also at 5. We dined at 7 alone & afterwards I dressed. Mr Gayangos was the first to arrive– We had a great many people this evening, & to my great astonishment amongst the rest appeared 2 ladies I had not invited the Mss of Fuente Hermosa & her daughter. I had been introduced to the girl at the Dss on Thursday & she had brought her mother to call on Friday to my astonishment. I received these ladies coldly but civilly & did not speak to them again. Just as the cotillion began I was obliged to ask Mr Ff to ask them to move from where they were sitting as their seats were wanted they then soon after went away. We kept up the dancing till after 2 & it was nearly 3 when I got to bed.
