31 January 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 31st [January 1871]. I slept badly & woke with a headache so that I did not get up till abt four when I laid on the sofa– Hill brought me a small box wh had come from London by the S. Messenger it contained the new diamond ornament I had got with the £100 Ivor had given me added to £150 from Henry. I also had 2 parcels from the M. brought by M. Argaiz & in it a book from Schrei: for me. At 6 I dressed & we went out to the annual dinner given by the Karnickys. A large feast at wh were all the Dip. Corps & the Ministers. Mme de Martino was also suffering from migraine & the Dss de la Torre also. Poor Mme de M. had to leave the dinner table & go home. Martos took me to dinner & I sat between him & De Blas. We soon came home as I was still suffering from my head & the entertainment was not over lively. I wore some of the new diamond ornaments as a cross on my neck & my mauve satin tunic with the white guipure lace–
