1 February 1871 — Madrid
Wednesday. 1st February [1871]. Got up latish. Had a drawing lesson of Grau. Wrote some letters & got some also. As it was a cold day I did not go out. I had a great many visitors. Mr Hunt was talking to me after lunch & I was telling him how I had found Pepito the cat walking over my china when the Marshal Serrano was announced with an AD.C. He stayed abt 20 minutes. Then called the Marqueses de Candia & their nice looking daughter & they all 3 spoke English very well. There suddenly was announced the Marquesa de Fuente Hermosa, & I was au desespoir thinking I should never see the end of her. She entered in a bustle & refused to take a chair & then began a long rigmarole in indifferent French saying she had misunderstood & thought I had invited her on Monday, & she begged my pardon & would never come again. I was horribly bothered & said all I could, that I quite understood it was a mistake &c—& was glad when I had bowed her out of the house—then came Mme de la Rochefoucauld & Miss Cavendish to see me– We dined at 7 & went early to bed.
