5 February 1871 — Madrid
Sunday. 5th [February 1871]. We both went to church & then afterwards to the last of Monasterio’s concerts. They played a trio of Beethoven’s & the great Quintett. Poor Monasterio was dreadfully affected while playing it & nearly broke down in the slow part of the last movement. He had quite an effort not to cry & one could see the lump in his throat. His own mother, of whom he is very fond, is out of her mind & now dying. On coming away we went for a little walk calling on Mme Karnicky but did not see her & came home to tea. Nobody came & we spent a quiet time reading & writing till dinner when came Messrs Ff. Sey: Spen: & Ash: & a Mr Dacre Hamilton who has just arrived from England. After dinner we talked over & arranged cotillion for tomorrow.
