24 March 1871 — Madrid | |
Friday. 24th [March 1871]. Spent the whole morning writing, as Grau sent word he could not come. At 1½ Bernadine came & we did some Glee learning till lunch. It was a very stormy showery day & I did not go out till 4½ & Henry did not go out at all. I went to leave some parcels & to call on the Hamiltons whom I found in & Mr H. was in high excitement. Mr H. told me there were 2 carriages yesterday in the Fuente of people dressed up in high combs to ridicule the ladies– Some of the ladies who insisted in driving out of the file were hissed—the Queen even went in the file– It is expected that ere long there will be some row at the Fuente– A duel is said to be going to take place between one of the Editors of the “Imparcial” & the Veloz Club—it is said that according to the rules of the Club lots have been drawn to see who shall fight & the lot has fallen on a young man of 19 who was not at the Club the day that the insult was given to the Queen. Mrs H. lent me 2 German books so I read German all the eveng. | |
