29 March 1871 — Madrid
Wednesday. 29th [March 1871]. Wrote letters in the morning & after lunch read Froude & went out riding with Henry at 4½; we rode in the Fuente & it was nearly 6 when we got home. While we were having some tea Marquis de Bassecourt & his daughter Caroline called & at the same time Mme Fuen Rubia. When they were gone I went to take off my habit & when I went back to the Boudoir I found M. de Martino there in a rabid mood. He had come to tell us that Del Cerro had told him that Friday being the King’s fête there was to be a reception at Court at which the Q. would receive the Dip. Corps in full dress & trains. This was startling news as we were totally unprepared & had been even told there would be no occasions to wear a train this year. De Martino departed & we dined & in the evening the De Martinos both came & stayed till 11—very pleasantly & quietly the evening passed.
