7 April 1871 — Toledo
Friday. 7th [April 1871]. Good Friday. Tired with rushing abt so much yesterday we slept so sound that we never heard the watchman at all in the night & at ½ past 8 when we woke found that Hill had knocked several times before without being able to wake us. We breakfasted as soon as possible & Emilia came in & told us to go to join her at the Cathedral at 10.30 which we did. The service was nearly over but I & Emilia stayed to the end while Henry & Pal went & took a walk. When we left the Cathedral with Hill who had joined us, we went poking about at the different silversmiths & antiquity shops & so passed the time till we returned at 1 to lunch. Henry & Pal soon came in having taken a long walk. After lunch Pal went out & Henry & I sat reading & writing till 3½ when we went up to the silversmiths shop where we were yesterday to see the Procession—as the Riaños had not come we walked about for ½ hour & then went & sat in the balcony. Then the Riaños joined us & we had to wait as the Procession was some time coming. There were figures of the Descent from the Cross—Virgins’ etc carried all very frightful but there were also men in black calico dresses with high peaked masks like magicians’ [The author has drawn a mask.] & also men in very good old armour which was very effective & pretty– When this was over we took a walk down thro’ the Puerta del Sol to the gardens of the Hospital out side the walls where we sat on benches & enjoy the country. The day had been showery but the evening cleared up & there was a lovely rainbow. At 6 we walked up again into the town & went to a café & all had a “refrescante” as yesterday & then went home tired & dined & went early to bed. Mr Gayangos & his son joined the Riaños last night from Madrid.
