8 April 1871 — Toledo
Saturday. 8th [April 1871]. We went early to the Cathedral & there met Emilia. The service was going on & Hill & I remained with Em: while Henry went with Mr Riaño to visit the Fabrica of Armes. There was a very effective ceremony at the Cathedral. The altar all this week had been covered with black & curtains hung over the altar piece & no music or bells had been heard– At the moment of the “Gloria in excelsis” the altar was unveiled, bells began to ring & the organ burst out. The effect was quite thrilling and a ray of sun light streaming at that moment thro’ a window wh was open at the top to allow the men to draw the curtain greatly added to it– There were then brought in 2 rams which were carried on the boys’ shoulders for the blessing of the priests. It is said these animals are then raffled for & the proceeds given to the lower servants of the Cathedral. This over Emilia & I went out & took a walk. We went to El Transito—a church wh had been a synagogue & then to Sta Maria la Blanca wh is Moorish & most lovely & had also been a synagogue– We then went to S. Juan de los Reyes wh was shut but the Keeper of the Museum took us in to the Cloister. I felt when I sat on the same bench where I sat so long last year when we were here as tho’ I had never moved—tho’ nearly a year had passed. We sat there talking some time & then turned home– After lunch—we sat & read till abt 4 when we went with the Riaños to walk. We called on the Architect who has a very pretty little clean house, & we went the rounds of the Prenderias & I got a fan at the shoemakers. We came home abt 5 as I was very tired & glad to get some tea & rest. After dinner we worked & read & went early to bed.
