26 April 1871 — En route to Cordova
Wednesday. 26th [April 1871]. at abt 10 we found ourselves at Mengibar & got some hot coffee & breakfast. In passing over the bridge of Vilches we had to stop & the carriages to be pushed across one by one on acct of the late accident when the engine of a goods train ran off the line smashed the bridge & went over into the river 3 lives being lost– It was very horrid to see the debris still lying in the stream– This delay made us abt 2 hours late in getting to Cordova where we arrived abt 3. I at once had some soup & laid down & rested till dinner at 5. After dinner we met the Sickles’ who are going tomorrow to Granada & I had a long talk with the old lady & hearing she has to start tomorrow morning at 5 I persuaded her to go to bed early.
