29 April 1871 — Seville | |
Saturday. 29th [April 1871]. Mr Esquivel (Pal’s brother in law) came to see us & with him Mr Williams; we went in the morning to the Cathedral & went into the Sacristy & saw the Custodia again. It is much larger but not so fine a design & workmanship as the one at Cordova which is by the father of the d’Arfe who made the Seville one. After spending some time there looking at pictures & chapels we went to the Alcazar to see the Exhibition of modern painting. There was nothing good there except for some copies of some old tile pictures by one Hernandez. After this Henry went to see an altar piece in the chapel of the Priest’s seminary where I was not allowed to enter so I went with Mr Williams to his house & waited & paid Mrs W. a visit. We then went & had our strawberry lunch at the Suisse & I came home & rested till after 4. when Henry fetched me & we went in the carriage Mr Pickman has lent us & came in to dinner & afterwards we had an open carriage of the Pickman’s & I & Henry & Mr Will: took a drive in the Delicias near the river where there were a quantity of smart people driving solemnly in rank as they do in the Fuente at Madrid. We came home abt 8 o’cl. | |
