1 May 1871 — Seville | |
Monday. 1st May [1871]. The heat was intense. I did not feel very well. Mr Bernar came in the morng & said he would come for us at 1. Mr & Mrs Pickman called on us– Also Mr Robles & also Dss Mariano who brought a beautiful inlaid mother of pearl box which Henry had bought of him with the Arms of Spain at the top & the Arms of the Franciscan Order & of Jerusalem on the side– Henry also brought home 2 silver plates—one of wh is for my dressing table & some silver buckles for me & a gold ornament with pearls– At 1 my head got much worse & I was obliged to give up going out & to lie down– I did not go to dinner but had some brought to me. After dinner being better I got up & went to sit in the gallery. The Manjons came to call & sat some time with us. I read till late– At 1 o’cl: we had a thunderstorm & a good deal of rain wh cooled the air. During dinner time as I lay on the bed—I heard a great noise in the street & asked Hill to find out what it was—she did not—but Henry afterwards told me it was 2000 women of the tobacco manufactory who were on strike against the Govt on acct of the poll tax & they had been breaking the Govt office windows. | |
