2 May 1871 — Seville
Tuesday. 2nd May [1871]. Henry went out in the morning with Mr Williams. At 1 I had some lunch & then Henry & Mr W. & I went out in the Pickman carriage & we went [to] Robles’ the dealers when in the middle came in the M & S. and so we said we would return next day & went to find a gentleman who was to take us to see an altar piece wh is for sale. We found the man & took him in the carriage with us to an out of the way place an old palace of the Altamira family– There we saw the altar piece which is all carved & gilt stone. Henry did not think it very appropriate for the S.K. Museum for whom he was inspecting it. There were a couple of old tombs figures kneeling which we admired more– From here we went to Sta Paula wh we are very fond of. The nuns behind the grill were chanting away thro’ their noses just as they were last year when we were here– How long time must have appeared to them in their narrow sphere! We then returned to the Hotel & dined. Directly after dinner came the Williams family & Henry Mrs & Miss W. & I got into the open carriage & drove to the Cartuja. The M. & S & Mr Will: followed in the high carriage. In abt 20 mins: we arrived & old Mr Pickman received us. It was nearly dark & we went up to see the simulation of moorish tiles Mr Rd P has made– When it got dark they lighted innumerable candles & we made a kind of procession thro the manufactory. We then went to see Mr Rd P’s private collection of old china but leaving the M & S we soon went & paid a visit to Mrs Pickman. There was one married daughter & 2 unmarried who accompanied us from her to the garden. Mr Pickman & I headed the procession arm in arm. Arrived at the Kiosk we found a kind of supper provided for us—strawberries, oranges, coffee champagne & ices– Henry & I were duly put in the right places & the “little bit of ’istory” was further completed by putting the M on my right “where the Queen mother sat, she did”. After a long & hearty supper we found our carriages & were soon home & in bed again.
