19 May 1871 — Madrid | |
Friday. 19th [May 1871]. I went with the M & S to Pals while the M sat to him & there met Pals’ brother in law Mr Esquivel whom we had met at Seville & who has now come to settle here. We returned to lunch. Afterwards Mme de Martino came & we went out driving together & called on Mme Prim. Found her better & more cheerful– Went on to pay more visits & drive in the Fuente. A boy threw a rotten apricot at Elizabeth & spoilt her gown– Later a boy threw a hard bit of potato & hit me on the forehead—we did not manage to catch them. Mr Twistleton dined with us & we took him to the Alhambra to see the Spanish Opera “Fernando et Implazado” in which the Hunts are singing– Emilia & her husband joined us there. Mr H sung wonderfully well & might have been taken for an artist. She sang well but a little flat. Home at 12½. | |
