23 May 1871 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 23rd [May 1871]. I went with the M to Pals: while she sat for her picture. Mr Twistleton came to luncheon & to take leave of us as he is going for a tour. At 4 we went to meet M. Bernar to see the Duke of Ossuna’s house & we went first to see the Armoury or at least what is left of it. There is armour for abt 200 men—but it is all plain—the best having been sold the year before we came. We also saw the library which is a very fine [illegible word] & we were shown some illuminated missals but there was nothing very remarkable except one in wh there were the signatures of Francis I & several other of that family—but Henry doubted their being genuine. We then went to the small house wh is the other side of the road. There are some pictures but nothing very special– The garden is pretty & the view lovely. After seeing this Henry went to the Cortès with M. Bernar & we went to the Hotel & picked up Mr S. Mackensie & took him round to the Prendarias– I had a headache & went to bed directly after dinner. | |
