24 May 1871 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 24th [May 1871]. I went with Henry to Pals to see how the M’s portrait was getting on, but did not stay as I had a deal of work to do for Henry. After lunch Elizabeth came & at 5½ she & I & Henry went for a drive. In the Calle St Bernardo a boy threw a stone at us wh caught Henry’s hat—we stopt & caught him & got him taken up. We went on to drive in the Fuente & coming home we called on the Dss de la Torre– She sent me down word that there were dreadful news from Paris so I ran in to see her. She said there were telegrams saying the Versailles Govt had entered Paris but the Communists had burnt down the Lavore-Tuilleries & all the public buildings. She was also in a great state on acct of things here. She said the Cortès had been sitting since 8 in the morng & that it was on permanence & the Repubs: very excited & wanting to vote against the King & she was told they would assassinate Serrano– It appears the Repubs: wont discuss Sr Barrera’s motion that they should make the “reglamento” of the Cortès before all other things. Henry went to see the Dss again after dinner & found that Serrano had been obliged to pass the motion without discussion & the Repubs were furious & said it was a coup d’etat—but nothing was really done against the rules– | |
