26 May 1871 — Madrid | |
Friday. 26th [May 1871]. M. Esquivel came & gave me a drawing lesson. In the middle Grau rushed into the house to say he had heard of some wonderful things to be bought & he dragged off Henry to a posada where a man had a lot of Hispano Moorish plates & a coral & silver necklace to sell wh Henry immediately bought. The necklace is beautiful with large silver beads & the coral is a good colour & large in size. The Murrays called in the afternoon & also Mr Mackensie. He concluded his bargains & took leave of us to return to Eng: today. We took a drive in the Fuente. After dinner we went with the M & S to the Canitz. Hy went first to the President where he heard that the news from Paris were awful—that 500 wounded had been left in the Tuilleries & burnt—that all the large shops & hotels were on fire & the Commune had killed a lot of the people they took prisoners. It is too revolting to think of! We played a game of written questions & answers & then came away. | |
