3 June 1871 — Madrid
Saturday. 3rd [June 1871]. Wrote in the morning. At 4 the Prim children came & Emilia & Juanito & we all went in our carriage to the Casa de Campo. We took a basket with bread & butter &c. & Emilia took her machine for heating water. We got out near a spring & got water; we then chose a shady place under the trees where we made the tea & cut the bread & butter. After we had had tea we walked about & picked wild flowers, poppies white & red, wild roses &c. At 7 we drove home. At 7½ we dined (Henry & I) at 8½ M. & Mme Palmaroli came & we all went to Price’s circus. It was a very cold evening & we were obliged to keep on our wraps in the theatre. There was a little girl who danced on the tight rope at the very top of the house & took a flying leap wh quite frightened one.
