4 June 1871 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 4th [June 1871]. Grau came while we at breakfast to ask Henry to go & see some old things a man had brought. He came back & said there was nothing he cared about. I went to church alone. Coming out I saw Miss Cracroft Lady Franklins niece, & I arranged to go & call on them after 5. After lunch we were told the Turkish Ambassador was here– Henry went to see him—& to Giovanni’s astonishment the little round man in a fez rushed at Henry & hugged him. He had come to call on the English Minister & to [his] surprise found his old friend. Giovanni said “He ran at H.E. & I thought he would squeeze him”. He is Kiamil Bey come on a special mission to felicitate the King on his coming to the throne. At 3 Henry & I drove out to Caravanchel to see Mme Montijo. It was a cold day & we found her sitting by the fire. She took us into the garden & gave us flowers & strawberries. We did not stay long & coming home I called at Eliz’s found Colobiano & Dragonetti & the Ayltons calling. Henry walked home & I went to call on Lady Franklin & found she was not very well. She is still a wonderful old lady & we arranged to drive together tomorrow. The Turkish Amb. & his secretary, who is very good looking agreeable to speak French very well, Dr Brehm, M. Grau & Pal also Ash; Go: & Ff. dined & we sat talking in the evening till 12 o’cl: Monteverde & España came in to see us in the evening. | |
