8 June 1871 — Madrid
Thursday. 8th [June 1871]. At ¼ to 12 I went off & fetched Lady Franklin & Miss Cracroft & we went to the Dss’ to see abt where we were to go to see the Corpus. We found the Queen was not gone to the Gobernacion to see it but to the Hotel de Ville so I took them to Mme de Comyns where we were just opposite & saw H.M. very well. The King was walking with the Ministers in the Procession & he had his new guard of honor in their new uniform for the 1st time today. They have scarlet coats & bearskins not unlike our grenadier guards. While passing us a woman rushed out of the crowd & with frantic gestures presented a petition. The Ministers opened it & read it to the King & as far as I could make out the King seemed to grant it & the woman retired flinging her arms abt & the procession proceeded. The Queen threw out a quantity of flowers as the procession passed– We got home abt 3 o’cl. Mr Ff: came in the afternoon to take leave as he is going for a few days to see some of the Marquis of Alcañices castles in the N. Henry went out riding. Lady Franklin, Miss Cracroft, the Riaños & Mr Ash: dined. Henry went out to the Presidencia in the evening. The Ayltons came in & we made a good deal of noise singing & talking till late—for when Henry returned he found us still up.
